How to Play Pufferfish

Swipe to Move

Swipe in any direction to move your pufferfish across a grid. Stay mobile — predators swim in from the right and you need room to dodge.

Tap to Puff Up

Tap the puff button to inflate. While puffed, you kill enemies on contact instead of dying. You can't move while puffed, so timing is everything.

Dodge Enemies

Predators swim toward you and attack when close. Swipe out of their path to dodge. Dodging earns points without risking your run.

Defeat Enemies

Puff up just before an enemy reaches you to destroy it. Kills earn 1,000+ points and build your combo streak for massive multipliers.

The Puff Mechanic

Your only weapon — use it wisely

Puffing is the core mechanic that separates beginners from pros. Tap the puff button and your pufferfish inflates, becoming deadly to enemies on contact. But there's a trade-off: you can't move while puffed, and you auto-deflate after about 2 seconds.

If you kill an enemy while puffed, great — your streak grows and you can keep going. If you miss, you enter a cooldown before you can puff again. The best players puff at the last possible moment, right before an enemy reaches them.

Normal

Full mobility. Swipe freely to dodge, but any contact with an enemy is fatal.

Puffed

Can't move, but destroys enemies on contact. Auto-deflates after ~2 seconds.

Multi-Kill

Kill multiple enemies in one puff for bonus points and extended puff time.

Consumables

Equip before a run — or go in with nothing for pure skill

Shield

Absorbs one hit from any enemy. Lets you survive a mistake without losing your run.

Reduced Cooldown

Puff again faster after a miss. Less downtime means more chances to fight back.

First Wave Invincible

Immune to damage in wave 1. Get your bearings and build an early streak risk-free.

Speed Boost

Faster grid movement. Great for dodging tight clusters or repositioning quickly.

Combo Timer

Extended window between kills to keep your streak alive. More forgiving combo chains.

Triple Combo

Boosted multi-kill bonus. Take out multiple enemies in a single puff for massive points.

Challenge System

Go head-to-head and wager coins

Beyond the leaderboards, you can call out any player in a 1v1 match. Post an open challenge for the world to beat, send a direct link to a friend, or target a specific rival from the leaderboard. Set an entry fee from free up to 250 coins — the winner takes 1.6x the pot, and draws get a full refund.

Compete locally, globally, daily, and weekly

Regional Rankings

You're ranked in your city, state/region, country, and worldwide. The more regions you rank in, the more prizes you can win.

Daily Resets

Daily leaderboards reset every 24 hours. Top 3 players in each region earn coin prizes. Fresh competition every day.

Weekly Cumulative

Every game adds to your weekly score. Top 3 earn prizes each Sunday — up to 1,000 coins for 1st place. Rewards consistency, not just one great run.

Prize Tiers

1st place gets the biggest prize, 2nd and 3rd get smaller amounts. Place on multiple boards — daily and weekly — to maximize earnings.

Pro Tips

Strategies from top-ranked players

Master the last-second puff. The closer you are to a predator when you puff, the more bonus points you earn. Practice the timing in free play before wagering coins.
Stay in the middle. Swimming too high or too low limits your escape routes. The center gives you the most options when predators come from both sides.
Don't panic-puff. Staying puffed drains your mobility. Short, precise puffs are better than holding it down. Think of it as a parry, not a block.
Coins aren't worth dying for. A coin near a predator cluster is bait. Your run score is worth more than any single coin pickup. Stay alive.
Play at off-peak hours. Regional leaderboards are less competitive at certain times. Your city board at 3 AM is easier to top than at 7 PM.
Stack consumables with combos. Speed boost + combo timer + a streak of kills = massive scores. Save your best runs for when you have the right combination equipped.
Pick skins that match your playstyle. Speed skins help with dodging. Puff duration skins favor aggressive play. Multiplier skins are for high-risk, high-reward players.
Watch for in-game achievements. They pop up during runs and reward bonus coins and shields. Completing them mid-run can turn a bad game into a profitable one.
